CONTEXT

Tshimologong Precinct exists to fulfil our “Africa Rising” destiny by producing world class developers, entrepreneurs and innovators of digital technology and content. We are an innovation ecosystem based in Braamfontein that propels entrepreneurship and grows the skills pipeline for the digital economy through collaborative partnerships. We are looking for a talented and ambitious professional developer who is an extrovert, patient, kind and most of all shares our passion for mentoring, coaching and nurturing skills in others to lead the Microsoft AppFactory internship programme within the Tshimologong Software Development Unit (SDU). Each programme is 9-months long and you will be mentoring graduates with growing their skills so that they can successfully secure employment. During each programme, you will be responsible for managing projects from start to finish and thus be exposed to all aspects of the software development lifecycle. We wish to instil our values so that they can become a world class software developers geared for the 4IR.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The job title is Senior Software Developer within the Software Development Unit. The Employee will report to the Software Development Manager. The role of the senior developer is to learn, teach, mentor and manage the interns on a variety of projects over each 9-month programme starting with C# ASP.NET Webforms and completing with to C# MVC with introduction to Xamarin. Microsoft SQL database will be used. As the projects tackled are for learning purposes, you are not expected to fully debug, maintain and support the solution – you will NOT be called after hours to deal with a crisis. The interns will be subject to high intensity and fast-paced learning over the 9-months and will cover the equivalent of up to 4 years in the industry.

 

The role of senior developer specifically entails, but is not limited to the following tasks:

  • Understand the scope of what needs to be developed
  • Obtain clarity on requirements
  • Help design the solution that needs to be built to meet these requirements
  • Build and deploy the solution
  • Develop and run test cases to test the solution
  • Mentor interns to impart knowledge and grow their skills
  • Assign clear tasks to interns and review the work that they have done
  • Help identify and fix bugs
  • Get the interns to communicate effectively in meetings, via email and telephonically
  • Take initiative to master advanced concepts
  • Manage the DevOps

With regards to mentorship the following will be expected:

  • Breakdown the work into manageable tasks that the interns can undertake.
  • Be able to direct them to appropriate online references that would help them complete the task
  • Review the code and explain shortcomings/weaknesses
  • Guide the interns to developing high quality code
  • Be a life coach
  • Help the interns with their soft skills

The senior developer must have the following characteristics

The following skills are essential

  • High level of general computer literacy
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Visual Studio Development IDE
  • Microsoft C# ASP.NET MVC 5.0 with Entity Framework (minimum 4 years)
  • Using SQL Server Database and DBMS
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), or Microsoft Report Builder or any other reporting tools
  • HTML5/CSS3
  • Experienced with continuous integration and deployment
  • Comfortable with deploying solutions to a hosting server
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure
  • Experience working with Xamarin
  • Competent working with a GIT repository

The required qualifications are:-

  • Degree or
  • MCSD Certification or
  • Similar

The experience required is 6+ years in software development and 4+ years working with Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 5.0 with Entity Framework.
