What do we do

Imprimatur is a digital community, a financial tool and a showcase for independent African millennial music talent. It helps musicians to:

  • build an audience;
  • plug into an industry ecosystem;
  • monetize their work; and
  • manage their finances sustainably.

The platform also:

  • gives music industry professionals the opportunity to source undiscovered African musical talent;
  • assists royalty collection agencies (such as SAMRO) to grow their footprint; and
  • allows financial institutions the opportunity to tailor-make products to suit this unique and largely untapped market.

We believe that high-caliber musicians should never be broke. That by bringing together the right resources in one digital space, we can better structure the African music industry for the coming generations.

Target Market

Imprimatur has divided its target market into three categories:

  • users (independent music artists);
  • key B2B customers (financial institutions and royalty collection agencies); and
  • a combined user-customer category (music industry professionals: advertising agencies, promoters, publishers, managers, booking agents, DJ, compilers, sound engineers, broadcasters, etc.)

Working on the principle of being a ‘big fish in a small pond’, Imprimatur aims to spread its market from Joburg, to Cape Town, then broader South Africa, and finally to the rest of Africa, while achieving critical mass and sustained growth.

“The incubation programme has helped sharpen my focus on what I should spend time on in order to progress the startup to the point of commercial viability. Furthermore, going through the programme with others who have taken big risks, like us, makes the experience invaluable”
