Tshimologong Background

Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct by Wits University aims to create world-class African digital entrepreneurs through enterprise and digital skills development. As a digital innovation ecosystem, we collaborate with academia, corporates and government to grow the digital economy by developing a pipeline of employable and entrepreneurial digital skills.

CONTEXT

The role of the Head of Digital Skills is two-fold:

  1. Drive digital innovation and serve as a change agent throughout Tshimologong championing the use of digital technology and practices to foster a digital mindset within the company.
  2. Manage the activities of the digital skills training team working across departments, programmes and projects delivered to stakeholders and overseeing the development and delivering of relevant and high-quality curriculum on IT-related topics.

MINIMUM /ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field such as computer science or information technology
  • Post-graduate degree in at least one technical field relevant to Tshimologong

  Academic Qualification/s

Certifications or qualifications that will be beneficial include:

●        Project Management certifications (e.g., PMBOK, PMP, Agile, CAPM)

●        Industry-specific certifications

 

Knowledge of, or experience with:

●        Experience in designing and launching digital platforms/programmes, leadership of successful digital transformation projects

●        Experience working with different environments including private sector, academia, and government

●        Familiarity with curriculum frameworks and methodologies with regards to effective curriculum design and delivery to entrepreneurs

●        Understanding of accreditation processes and the ability to align training programs with unit standards set by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) in terms of unlocking potential sources of funding

●        Experience in a business incubator, a start-up advisory or other entrepreneurial experience

Strategic Decision Making and implementation

Develop high quality digital skills strategies and plans ensuring their alignment with short-term and long-term objectives of the company

  • Develop an internal digital transformation plan for Tshimologong, identifying internal digital skills gaps and develop strategies to address them for Executive Team approval
  • Develop an understanding of digital skills needs of stakeholders (university, corporates, start-ups and entrepreneurs) to develop relevant and sustainable value offerings aligned with the company strategy
  • Seek strategic and tactical alignment with other Tshimologong skills academies i.e., Animation, Gaming etc.
  • Implement approved strategic plan through the development and implementation of digital skills plans and programmes
  • Ensure annual review of Digital Skills Strategic Plan and progress towards achievement of strategic objectives for the department
  • Propose and seek Executive Team approval for changes to the Digital Skills Department strategy to ensure alignment with the operating environment

Risk Management

Identify, assess, and mitigate risks that may impact projects and programmes.

  • Identify risks within that affect programmes and projects within the Digital Skills department
  • Implement company risk management strategies within the department where relevant to support the company’s risk management framework
  • Review and report project and programme risks to the executive team

Leadership and Team Management

Lead and motivate subordinates to advance team engagement developing a high performing Digital Skills team

  • Develop and maintain a healthy culture of high-performance within the Digital Skills Development Team
  • Collaborate with other departments and teams to integrate digital skills into various aspects of the organisation’s operations and processes
  • Set clear team objectives for the team and regularly meet with the team to evaluate progress
  • Conduct performance management within the team ensuring reinforcement of high-performance culture within the team
  • Plan adequate staffing levels within the team to ensure delivery on department strategy and delivery of programmes within the Digital Skills Department
  • Identify training needs and gaps in knowledge and skills within the Digital Skills team and ensure that these gaps are addressed in the best approach possible.

Governance

Ensure good governance in the Digital Skills Department through adherence to corporate legal guidelines, policies, and implementation of company procedures

  • Ensure regular and transparent reporting to the Executive Management team
  • Oversee team compliance to policies, procedures and guidelines ensuring alignment to the strategic intent of the department and the company as a whole
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements are met with regards to projects and programmes
  • Ensure that all statutory submissions with regards to projects and programmes are submitted timeously

Financial Performance

Make high-quality financial decisions to advance the business objectives of the department and increase profits

  • Ensure accurate and regular financial reporting to the executive team
  • Set budgets together with Executive Management team to ensure sustainability of the department
  • Regularly monitor the department’s financial progress against budgets to ensure sustainability of the Digital Skills department through effective allocation of resources
  • Support the company audit process by ensuring department financial reporting is completed timeously and accurately avoiding audit comments

Operational Oversight

Oversee the operations within the Digital Skills Department

  • Champion the use of digital technology and practices to foster a digital mindset across the organisation, collaborating with other departments and teams to integrate digital skills into various aspects of the organisation’s operations and process
  • Provide guidance and expertise by sharing knowledge and insights on emerging technologies and industry trends with other departments through regular communication, presentations, workshops, or training sessions.
  • Oversee projects management and operational plans within the department to support the strategic objectives of both the department and the company
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of digital skills training programmes (internal and external) and make recommendations for improvement
  • Monitor performance of the department against operational plans
  • Work with Business Intelligence department to ensure digital capability is available to measure the performance of websites, social media, apps, and other digital programmes launched by the organisation against agreed KPIs
  • Advise the Executive Team on resource requirements within the department to ensure the provision of adequate resources to achieve the operational plans of the department, working closely with Human Resources to attract and retain top talent and to build digital capabilities across the organisation

Stakeholder engagement

Build trust relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for important stakeholders

  • Actively represent the Incubator and the Digital Skills department through regular engagements with stakeholders e.g., start-ups, entrepreneurs and university researchers, funders.
  • Ensure that strong positive relationships are built with all partners, stakeholders, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and digital best practices among partners and colleagues
  • Engage in regular meetings and communications with stakeholders ensuring continuous flow of information and updates on projects of interest
  • Contribute towards proposal writing from a digital skills development perspective and ensure proposals of the highest quality is submitted to bids that are aligned with the company’s strategy and goals
  • Build and maintain relationships with programme stakeholders, managing expectations and understanding their needs
  • Develop and present periodic progress reports to programme stakeholders 

Business Development

Identify and develop strong, lasting relationships with sources of funding

  • Support Chief Executive Officer in identifying business development leads, sales pitches and proposal development
  • Design and coordinate efforts to take programmes to market
  • Align and co-ordinate efforts with other partners and stakeholders to attain mutual benefit and grow the organisation’s product offering
  • Communicate with existing and potential partners to retain viable businesses, and to develop new business opportunities

Digital Skills Programme Development

  • Identify and ensure relevant curriculum is developed or made available as required by programme participants
  • Design Programmes as per client needs and ensure all training materials are captured in a curriculum database for future use.
  • Continuously monitor and ensure learning material remains up to date and relevant, as well as accessible to future programmes delivered in the organisation
  • Closely manage and administer the implementation of programmes, workshops, bootcamps by team members
  • Manage the lifecycle of programmes, including potential risk and risk mitigation plans
